BAND AID – DO THEY KNOW IT’S CHRISTMAS TIME? – (1984)

La storia di questa canzone è da brividi. Nel 1984 un documentario portò all’attenzione pubblica la carestia che aveva colpito l’Etiopia. Bob Geldof, che aveva visto il reportage, ne fu talmente colpito da decidere di produrre un disco i cui ricavati avrebbero potuto alleviare la situazione così contattò Midge Ure degli Ultravox ed insieme diedero vita al brano. In un secondo momento Geldof mise insieme numerosi artisti (tra i quali Phil Collins, Simon Le Bon, Bono, George Michael, Sting, David Bowie, Boy George, Paul McCartney) che uniti sotto il nome di Band Aid resero il brano famosissimo. Nel 1989 e nel 2004 altri artisti hanno voluto riproporre il brano, ma la versione dell’ottantaquattro resterà sempre unica.
